Opening of the British Pavilion

On the 22nd April 1909 the British pavilion was opened on the occasion of the 8th Venice Biennale; the initiative of a small committee of British enthusiasts acting on the encouragement of the Secretary General of the Biennale, Antonio Fradeletto.

Appeal of the British Committee, January 1909

The money for the Pavilion was provided by a single benefactor, Sir David Salomons, a railway magnate and pioneer of motoring in Britain. He made the gift in order that, in his words, "English artists shall not be placed in a worse position than foreign artists at an important International Exhibition"; that they may "extend their means of becoming known and earning their livlihood"; and that "their Art may be improved by competition of a healthy character." The Committee launched a public appeal to raise further funds for the decoration and maintenance of the Pavilion. (Taken with kind permission from Britain at the Venice Biennale 1895-1995 Edited by Sophie Bowness and Clive Phillpot)
